Chapter twenty

I want to see you soar . The words reverberate through me. I feel the heat of his gaze, his words, long after he leaves me in the clearing. It's utterly unnerving how quickly he switches from furious to teasing. It’s even more unnerving how I find myself wanting more from him. I try to squash that from my mind as I find my way back to camp under the light of a full, shining moon.

Errant thoughts dance while I lie by the fire, keeping me from sleep. My eyes are closed, but the feeling of crushing water remains, haunting me. The fear as the last of my breath left me tastes acrid in my mouth, bringing up bile that I swallow down. I shiver and roll over, tucking myself deeper into my woven blanket.

I’m completely exhausted, yet sleep evades me. My teeth start to chatter and I clench my jaw to stop the nervous tick. A sigh and a shuffle sounds nearby and I wrench my heavy eyelids open as a warm weight settles on top of me. A thick wool blanket. I look up at Aidan’s retreating form as he lays back down on his sleeping mat. He rests his head on top of his arms, staring up at the sky.

“You need that more than I do,” he whispers, barely audible over the crackling of the fire. “Lest your chattering teeth wake everyone up. You know how melodramatic Rian is when he’s woken before dawn.”

I wrap Aidan’s blanket tightly around myself. The smell of cedar hits me and I inhale deeply, taking comfort in his scent as it envelops me.

“Thank you,” I whisper back at him. I don’t know if he’s already asleep, but he makes no reply.

Finally warm enough, my eyelids drift closed of their own accord.
